Child custody issues involving deployed servicemembers are not only difficult to navigate, especially when involving different laws in different jurisdictions, but they can jeopardize the safety of the servicemember and national security by distracting the servicemember from his/her mission while deployed. Major Lyndsey Olson, of the Military and Veterans Affairs Section, has taken the lead in lobbying for passage of the Uniform Deployed Parents Custody and Visitation Act (UDPCVA) in Minnesota during the upcoming legislative session. Major Olson has been involved in this effort from the very beginning and contributed to its drafting by the Uniform Law Commission. Earlier this year she presented a CLE on UDPCVA with my former partner at Moss & Barnett, Kim Bonuomo. The M&VA Council unanimously voted this week to recommend that the Minnesota State Bar Association actively lobby for passage of this important law. Stay tuned as we navigate the uncertain waters of the legislative process.
